Queensbury, NY: It all started with a spark that ignited a firestorm of support through our over 500 REALTOR members. Kudos to Realtor Bob Sears and the team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Blake Realty for getting the “puck” rolling to bring the idea to our Community Outreach Committee—where we then launched our fundraiser in mid July 2017 and ran it for only four weeks to raise funds to support the Adirondack Civic Center Coalition’s fund drive to keep hockey in downtown Glens Falls, NY.
Our Board of Directors took the fundraiser idea one step further and posted out a challenge to our over 570 members that our association would match dollar-for-dollar what they contributed up to $10,000! Our REALTOR members and brokerages responded in great numbers and they raised $12,100 and with the board’s match we were able to donate $21, 100 to the Adirondack Civic Center Coalition, a non profit organization who manages the civic center and was seeking funds to ensure that a hockey team could be attracted and stay in Glens Falls. As REALTORS we live and work locally and we realize the benefits of having a vibrant downtown and the economic support events at the civic center offer.
Our association has a long history of supporting area non profit organizations from area food banks and pet shelters, to the Double H Ranch and the American Red Cross just to name a few. We provide volunteers to support various specific projects and also do fundraising and provide tangible donations. But this was the largest single financial fundraiser we had ever undertaken (our association has been around since 1959) ….and all in four weeks! A BBQ picnic at the SAR office located at 296 Bay Rd in Queensbury culminated the efforts. Four Real Estate offices were recognized in various categories for their outstanding efforts and all contributors were invited to meet and greet hockey players, management and most of all the Adirondack Thunder Hockey Team’s new mascot- a 7 foot tall Viking with a “Thor-like” hammer! A great time was had by all and special thanks to REALTORS Sean Rogge (President Elect), Eden Whitaker (President), Christine McKee (Treasurer-elect) and Dave Strainer (MLS Secretary) who were gracious (and brave) enough to get into a Dunk Tank to raise even more money at the BBQ that day!
