Queensbury NY: December 9th was not a normal day at the Southern Adirondack REALTORS association located on Bay Road in Queensbury. It was a day where a record number of over 235 REALTORS and Affiliates gathered together to reflect on an amazing and somewhat stressful 2017, to recognize their devoted volunteer leaders, committee chairs and staff and to conduct their largest fundraiser for RPAC the Realtors Political Action Committee event of the year- raising over $21K.
Each year real estate brokerages from Warren, Washington, Saratoga, and Essex counties get together at SAR’s annual Holiday Gala to share stories, merriment and solidarity while supporting their real estate profession and industry. The year 2017 had been full of challenges especially in Washington DC where the actions of the proposed tax reform package prompted several “Calls for Action” by the National Association of REALTORS, Inc. (NAR). The proposed tax package threatened the complete removal of the mortgage interest deduction and ability to deduct local and state property taxes- a move that would have negated much of the incentives for home ownership, especially for those considering moving from renting to ownership. Millions of REALTORS from around the country rallied and through aggressive lobbying and outreach by REALTORS and the NAR at least portions of both deductions were retained in the final package. Additionally in 2017 the continued shortage of housing inventory for sale in our area as well as nationwide caused home buyers to act quickly and REALTORS to be even more on their toes and vigilant to do what they do best which is to serve their customers.
As a feature of the SAR annual holiday gala, the presidents of the association and the multiple listing service are recognized for their outstanding leadership and outgoing board of director members are also appreciated. This year, Eden Whitaker (DeMarsh Real Estate) was commended for her energy and vision leading the association on fruitful year and Kenneth Whiting (Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Blake Realtors) was commended for his long standing commitment to the MLS and his role on a select task force to bring a regional MLS to fruition. Incoming presidents, Sean Rogge (Howard Hanna- Capital) and Willie Bea McDonald (McDonald Real Estate Professionals) were sworn in as the 2018 presidents of the association and MLS respectively.
After a beautiful luncheon at the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge, where the function was held, the 2017 REALTOR of the year award was bestowed on Angie Mead, Licensed Associate Real Estate Broker from Gallo Realty in Chestertown. Mead had served as the youngest president of the association (in 2016) and now at 35 years old also has the distinction of being its youngest REALTOR of the year recipient.
